Music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim

and book by James Lapine

An ambivalent Cinderella? A blood-thirsty Little Red Ridinghood?

A Prince  Charming with a roving eye? A Witch … who raps?

They’re all among the cockeyed characters in this fractured fairy tale

When a Baker and his wife learn they’ve been cursed with childlessness by the Witch next door, they embark on a quest for the special objects required to break  the spell (a cow as white as milk… a cape as red as blood… hair as  yellow as corn… a slipper as pure as gold… ) swindling, lying to and stealing ensue!

Everyone’s wish is granted at the end of Act One but the consequences of their actions return to haunt them later, with disastrous results. A Giant steps down from the heavens and takes a few lives before the survivors realise that they have to act altogether in order to succeed.

Thus, what begins a lively irreverent fantasy becomes a moving lesson about community responsibility and the stories we tell our children.

Into the Woods premiered at the Old Globe Theatre in San Diego, California, on December 4, 1986 and ran for 50 performances under the direction of James Lapine, winning  the 1988 New York Drama Critics’ Circle Award and Drama Desk Award for  Best Musical, whilst the original cast recording won a Grammy Award.  Joanna Gleason won the Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical and James Lapine (book) and Stephen Sondheim (original score) also won the  Tony Award.  In 2010, the Olivier Award winning Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre production, directed by Timothy Sheader and ran for a six week limited season, winning the Laurence Olivier Award for Best Musical Revival.
